Sweet, tangy sloppy joe seasoning with tomato, brown sugar, mild chile, mustard and bell pepper for a quick skillet supper.

Flavor & cooking character

Sweet, tangy, tomatoey and savory, with gentle chile warmth.

The blend brings the ketchup-and-mustard character of a classic diner sloppy joe, with minced onion and green bell pepper for texture. It needs liquid to come together: add tomato sauce and a little water after the meat is browned, then simmer until thick. The brown sugar can scorch in a dry, very hot pan, so add the seasoning with the liquid.

What to cook

Ground beef or turkey sloppy joes, lentil sloppy joes, sliders, stuffed peppers, baked potatoes, tater tot casserole and chili dogs.

How much to use & when to add it

2 tablespoons per pound of ground meat, with one 8 oz can of tomato sauce.

Use this amount as a starting point for flavor, then adjust to your food and taste. If other ingredients bring salt, sweetness or heat, account for those before adding more seasoning.

Kitchen recipe: Weeknight sloppy joes

Serves 4. You need 1 pound ground beef or ground turkey, 1/2 cup diced onion, 1/4 cup diced green bell pepper (optional), 2 tablespoons Sloppy Joe Seasoning, one 8 oz can tomato sauce, 1/4 cup water and 4 hamburger buns.

Cook the meat, onion and pepper in a large skillet over medium-high heat for 6 to 8 minutes, breaking up the meat, until no pink remains and it reaches 160°F (165°F for turkey). Drain any excess fat. Lower the heat to medium, add the tomato sauce and water, then stir in the seasoning; adding it with the liquid keeps the brown sugar from scorching. Simmer uncovered 8 to 10 minutes, stirring often, until thick enough to mound on a spoon. Taste, then pile onto toasted buns with pickles or coleslaw.
