Flavor & cooking character
Tomato-rich, tangy, savory, slightly sweet and umami-forward.
The powder adds concentrated tomato character without opening a can. It is useful for small portions, but the amount of water required depends on the desired consistency; do not assume a universal paste-to-powder conversion.
What to cook
Pizza and pasta sauces, soups, dips, taco seasoning, barbecue rubs, snack seasonings, rice and dry mixes.
How much to use & when to add it
Start with 1 tablespoon per cup of sauce or 1 teaspoon per cup of soup.
Whisk with warm water gradually and allow time to hydrate before judging thickness.
Use this amount as a starting point for flavor, then adjust to your food and taste. If other ingredients bring salt, sweetness or heat, account for those before adding more seasoning.
Kitchen idea: Quick tomato pan sauce
Whisk 1 tablespoon tomato powder with 1/3 cup warm water. Add to softened onion with 1 teaspoon olive oil and a pinch of oregano, then simmer gently. Thin with water as needed and taste for salt before spooning over beans or pasta.
